Meaning of Citrine: Sunny Optimism, Clarity, and Joy | Bloom

We can all use a little help, encouragement, and inspiration sometimes. Whatever you believe about the healing properties of gemstones, it’s undeniable: Jewelry empowers us. That’s the motivation behind our Gemstone Feature series. By sharing the stories of some of the gemstones gracing our latest Bloom pieces, we celebrate the countless ways jewelry brings positive energy to our lives.

November birthstone Citrine — also the traditional gift for the 13th wedding anniversary — has been used in jewelry for thousands of years. From real royals like Queen Victoria to Art-Deco-era Hollywood royalty like Joan Crawford, Citrine has long been beloved for its understated and elegant golden sparkle. Nowadays, given its relative affordability and durability, Citrine is one of the most popular yellow gemstones.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, given the similar coloring of both gemstones, Citrine is often confused with fellow November birthstone Topaz. But sunny yellow Citrine has a bright positivity all its own. Read on to learn more about the origins, supposed healing properties, and meaning of Citrine.

What Is Citrine?

Citrine is a type of transparent yellow-to-orange variety of Quartz. In its natural form, it gets its coloring from the presence of iron in the Quartz. But as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) explains, naturally occurring Citrine is quite rare today, so most modern Citrine is made by treating Amethyst Quartz with heat. (Apparently, the original hue of the Amethyst Quartz used can determine how rich the resulting yellow of the Citrine will be.)

What Is the Meaning of Citrine?

The word Citrine is believed to come from the French word for “lemon,” citron. Citrine is known by some as the “light maker” or the “sunshine stone,” and has become associated with the uplifting warmth and positivity that sunshine often brings. Others refer to Citrine the “money stone,” believing it to promote both wealth and abundance. Generally speaking, the meaning of Citrine can be said to reflect optimism, positive energy, joy, abundance, and the clarity that comes from seeing something in a sunnier light.

What Are the Healing Properties of Citrine?

The supposed healing properties of Citrine are also focused on clarity, positivity, and joy:

  • Promoting clear hearing and thinking. According to the American Gem Society (AGS), Citrine supposedly imparts the ability to hear and think more clearly.
  • Supporting optimism, motivation, joy, and creativity. Sunny Citrine is thought by many to bring wearers energy, positivity, joy, and creative inspiration. Supposedly, Citrine is such a positive gemstone that negative energy can’t even come near it.
  • Aiding in prosperity, abundance, sociability, and confidence. AGS also suggests that success and abundance are associated with Citrine. Many other sources suggest that Citrine’s optimism and positivity translate to increased confidence and sociability.
